TABERNACLE OF PRAYER FOR ALL PEOPLE - JAMAICA
Reach the Heart and Save the Soul
APOSTLE JOHNNIE L. WASHINGTON
Apostle Johnnie Lee Washington was a mighty man of valor, called by God to birth many souls into the Kingdom of God. He was born March 3, 1929 in Mt. Bayou, Mississippi, the oldest of eight children born to Rufus and Ida Belle Washington. He was a man of great compassion, who had a great love for the souls of men. Many great and notable miracles of healing were wrought under the ministry of this precious servant of God. The blind was made to see, the lame walked, and many were healed of chronic diseases.
To this day, many canes, crutches, back braces and such line the back wall of our sanctuary as a testimony to the miracle working power of God. Apostle Washington often told us, “Man's extremity is yet God's opportunity, and what the doctors cannot do, is just right for God. And today if you take Jesus for your partner, certainly you can make all your plans large, for in Him there is no failure."
Apostle Washington's ministry began on the streets. Says he, “Before the church came into being, I was a minister that preached in the streets, on the corners of Forty-Second Street and Eighth Avenue, Fulton and Nostrand, Fulton and Franklin, Broadway and Rockaway, those were my pulpits. That's where I preached at, and from the street meetings came the Tabernacle of Prayer." The Lord launched him into tent ministry, on the corner of Fulton Street and Claremont Avenue in downtown Brooklyn. The ministry expanded to the corner of Eastern Parkway and Hopkinson Avenue in Brooklyn, Roy Wilkins Park in Jamaica, NY, and various parts of the country, under a tent that seated five thousand. Hundreds of souls came to Christ nightly as Apostle Washington preached the gospel of Jesus Christ without compromise.
Apostle Washington traveled across the country preaching one message, “It's Holiness or Hell.” He went into the highways and hedges, compelling men, women, boys and girls to come to Jesus. In every service, the altar was filled with hungry souls, crying out “What must I do to be saved?' and he lovingly led them to Christ. His motto, that became the church's mantra, was “Reach the Heart, and Save the Soul.” At any given time somewhere across the country and around the world, you could hear the Faith and Deliverance Broadcast, with Apostle Washington preaching the unadulterated word of God.
Apostle Washington founded the Tabernacle of Prayer for all People, Inc., The Center of Hope, in August of 1969 at 34 Rockaway Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. Soon after the church moved across the street to 41 Rockaway Avenue. Due to the church's tremendous growth, the church moved to 503 Glenmore Avenue in August of 1974. In October of 1977, the church marched to its present location, 165-11 Jamaica Avenue, Jamaica, NY, After each move, he would say, “On opening day,
the place was packed out, but the next Sunday you could have thrown a brick in the place and not hit a soul," but God gave the increase, and added to the church such as should be saved.
Apostle Washington was the Overseer of the Tabernacle of Prayer Fellowship, with over fifty churches along the eastern seaboard, Louisiana, Mississippi and California, as well as numerous Bible Institutes. He encouraged the people to “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
Apostle Washington was called from labor to reward on April 22, 1986. He fought a good fight and kept the faith, crying loud and sparing not, and was respected for the stand that he took.
